#BookReview - The Butcher (Fifth Republic Series Book 1) by Penelope Sky

🔥 Hot Mess Lit Review: The Butcher by Penelope Sky 🔥

Genre: Dark Romance, Crime, Power Struggles, Possessive Alpha
Vibe Check: A heartbreak, a bartender job, and the most feared crime lord in Paris? Yeah, this is about to be a wild ride.
Other Notes (see sidebar): 🔪💀🖤🔥👑🥃🎭🕶️💔

Blurb:

I found out my husband of three years had cheated on me and his mistress is the one who told me—because he didn’t have the balls to do it himself.

I move out and get a new apartment, a job as a bartender, and try to move on with a broken heart. I wonder where it all went wrong, if I hadn’t been enough for him, if I’d been stupid for marrying him in the first place.

I’m at work one night when he walks inside—
the most beautiful man I’ve ever seen. He sits at the bar and a forest fire burns between us. I was depressed the moment before he entered, but the second I look at his blue eyes, I forget the dumpster fire that my life has become. I invite him back to my place and it’s the most passionate night of my life. I expect to never see him again.

I just want him as an anti-depressant—but he wants me all to himself. I just got my heart ripped out of my chest so I want something easy and no-strings-attached, but he wants all the strings because he’s hooked.

I don’t get much of a say in the matter, and that’s not surprising when I learn why—because he’s the Butcher. The crime lord of all crime lords, the boss that overshadows all of Paris, that makes everyone abide by his rules—or pay.

And now I’m his.

 First Impressions

📖 Before I even turned a page… I was already hooked by the concept. Betrayal? Check. Falling into the arms of a dangerous man? Double check. Something about the name The Butcher screams, this guy doesn’t do relationships—he does power plays. I mean, am I the only one that chases red flags?

Did It Deliver? Or Did It Disappoint?
🚀 Expectations vs. Reality – I expected a mafia romance with a possessive, dangerous hero, but this book delivered so much more. The emotional wreckage from her failed marriage made her easy to root for, while The Butcher himself? Intimidating, but strangely irresistible.

🔥 Best Thing About It: The chemistry. From the moment they meet, it’s an instant, undeniable pull—the kind of attraction that makes terrible decisions feel like the best possible choices.

🤦‍♀️ Worst Offender: Her ex-husband. His pathetic cheating doesn’t even rank as high-stakes compared to the world she’s about to step into. Honestly, he deserved worse than just losing her.

The Hot Mess Breakdown
💀 Characters: She’s stronger than she thinks, but being around The Butcher forces her to realize it. He’s dangerous, calculating, and never lets anyone have control over him—except for her, in a way he never expected.

📜 Plot: This isn’t just about falling for a crime lord. It’s about survival, about navigating power, and about how dangerous love can truly be.

🖋 Writing Style: Direct, fast-paced, and soaked in tension—you feel the chemistry, the risk, and the emotional stakes on every page.

😡 Emotional Impact: HIGH. You’re **torn between wanting her to escape and wanting her to let herself fall deeper into his world**.

Final Verdict
🔥 Take It or Torch It? Take it—if you love intense, high-stakes romance that keeps you on edge.*
💰 Worth Your Money? If possessive, power-driven antiheroes are your thing, absolutely. If you want soft romance, run far, run fast.
📢 Who Should Read This?* Fans of mafia romance, obsessive love, and books where dominance is the name of the game.

Hot Mess Lit Rating: 🔥🔥🔥🔥 – Possessive, high-risk, completely addictive.
